GIS – 07 December 2024: Mr Dharambeer Gokhool and Mr Jean Yvan Robert Hungley have been sworn in as President and Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius respectively, today, at the State House in Réduit, preceeding their election at the National Assembly on 06 December 2024.
The newly appointed President took the oath of Allegiance and oath of Office of the pursuant to Section 30(b) of the Constitution before the Chief Justice, Ms Rehana Bibi Mungly-Gulbul. As for the Vice-President, he took the oath of Allegiance and oath of Office of the pursuant to Section 30(b) of the Constitution before the President, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool.
The swearing-in ceremony was held in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond Bérenger; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra; Cabinet Ministers; and other eminent personalities.
In a press statement, Mr Gokhool stated that the post of President is a very challenging one and he affirmed that he will shoulder his responsibilities and serve the country to the best of his abilities. ’’As the President of the Republic, I will be a people’s President who is close to the citizens,’’ he said.
His presidency, he highlighted, will be guided by the principles of inclusion, and will be in line with Government’s programme and its key priorities. They are namely: sustainable development and poverty alleviation; democracy and human rights; the fight against drug trafficking; enhanced quality of services; preserving social values; inclusion of senior citizens; and the promotion of technology and innovation for social development.
The President also indicated that he will work hard to promote Mauritius on the international front and make of the country the star and key of the Indian Ocean whilst leaving a legacy for future generations.
As for the Vice-President, he said that his objective is to contribute in the economic development of the country adding that he will deliver his duties to the best of his capabilities. For him, safeguarding democracy and freedom of the press will be of prime concern.
