GIS- 13 December 2024: A wreath-laying ceremony was held, this afternoon, at Les Salines to commemorate the 15th death anniversary of Late Dr James Burty David, in presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
The Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, the Junior Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Gilles Fabrice David, as well as other personalities also attended the ceremony.
In a statement, Junior Minister David, son of late Dr James Burty David, spoke of the latter as a father figure to many, whose passing was a tremendous loss not only for his biological family but for all who held him in high regard. The Junior Minister also highlighted Dr David’s remarkable contributions as a writer and Minister, amongst others, emphasising his unwavering loyalty, resilience, and commitment as a true fighter for his values.
Dr James Burty David, the former Minister of Local Government, Rodrigues, and Outer Islands, was born on 16 April 1946. After completing his B.A in English, French, and History at London University, he pursued further academic achievements, earning a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and PhD from the University of Bordeaux. Throughout his career, he has served as a rector, freelance journalist, and educational TV lecturer, reflecting his commitment to education and public service.
In his political career, Dr David has a distinguished track record of leadership. Serving as a member of the National Assembly and later as Vice-Chairperson of the Commonwealth Local Government Forum in 2006, he has been deeply involved in fostering regional cooperation. His active participation in Mauritius’ struggle for independence in March 1968 underscores his dedication to the nation’s history and ideals.
