GIS- 01 June 2025: The continuation of the development of cooperation and consolidating bilateral ties between Mauritius and India, were at the core of a working session between the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam and the Foreign Secretary of the Republic of India, Mr Vikram Misri, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port-Louis.
The High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava, was also present on the occasion.
In a statement Mr Vikram Misri underlined that the purpose of his visit is to make a follow up on the visit of the Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Shri Narendra Modi to Mauritius in March 2025, and carry forward the momentum of the discussions that were held during that visit.
He pointed out that the Indian Prime Minister recently had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Ramgoolam, which focused on taking forward various initiatives that were discussed during his March visit.
Moreover, recalling that Indian Government is expecting the visit of Prime Minister Ramgoolam shortly, the Foreign Secretary Misri emphasised that the purpose of his visit is primarily to see how they can best prepare for it as well as consider which initiatives the two countries can undertake together.
Underpinning the special consideration that India has for Mauritius, Mr Vikram Misri highlighted both countries are bounded by a shared past, and remains driven by hopes for a brighter future. The shared democratic traditions, shared maritime destiny that unite India and Mauritius were at the core of our meeting today, he said.
As regards the Agreement between Mauritius and the United Kingdom concerning the Chagos Archipelago, the Indian Foreign Secretary affirmed that India views it in the context of the completion of the decolonisation of Mauritius.
India, he underpinned, has for a long time taken a consistent stance on this issue, standing firmly with Mauritius as it sought to protect its interest, reaffirm and protect its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
He added that that India is glad that these negotiations have culminated successfully in an Agreement that both sides are satisfied whilst expressing conviction that the impact of this Agreement will be reflected in the cooperation between India and Mauritius as well as other partners of the region.
