Reception marking assumption of office of new Chinese Ambassador to Mauritius

GIS – 27 May 2025: The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China hosted a reception to mark the assumption of office of the new Ambassador of China to Mauritius, Dr Huang Shifang, yesterday evening at the InterContinental Resort Mauritius in Balaclava.

The Vice–President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Jean Robert Yvan Hungley; the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond Berenger; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra; Ministers, Members of the National Assembly and representatives from the diplomatic corps were present for the event.

In a gesture of goodwill and mutual respect the dignitaries symbolically raised a toast to mark the beginning of Dr Huang’s diplomatic mission and to reaffirm the longstanding friendship between Mauritius and China.

In her keynote address, Ambassador Shifang expressed her gratitude to the Government and people of Mauritius for the warm hospitality received upon her arrival. She highlighted the longstanding friendship between Mauritius and China, built on principles of equality, mutual respect, and support for each other’s core interests. Acknowledging Mauritius’s firm adherence to the One-China Policy, she commended the recent achievement regarding the Chagos Archipelago.

The Ambassador recalled the significant milestones that have shaped Mauritius-China relations, namely the setting up of the very first overseas China Cultural Centre, the signing of the pioneering Free Trade Agreement between China and an African nation, and the remarkable growth in people-to-people exchanges. She noted a 62% increase in Chinese tourist arrivals in 2024 and stressed the continuous training opportunities provided to Mauritian professionals through programmes supported by the Chinese Government.

Dr Shifang further expressed her vision to deepen cooperation with Mauritius in key sectors such as investment, finance, blue economy, green development, and digital infrastructure. She reaffirmed China’s commitment to aligning future initiatives with Mauritius’s development goals, while also supporting a free, open, and fair global economic system.
