GIS – 02 September 2025: The Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank, Mr Bill Winters, CBE, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, today, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
In a statement after the meeting, Mr Winters highlighted that he had a very insightful exchange with the Prime Minister. Earlier, he also met with the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius and representatives of local financial institutions.
Mr Winters commended Mauritius as a “fabulous place with an open economy, a super high-quality talent pool, and a forward-looking vision.” Discussions with the Prime Minister, he said, revolved around the evolving dynamics of global finance and trade, the challenges posed by international trade tensions, and the opportunities for Mauritius to strengthen its role on the global stage.
He underlined that Standard Chartered has been operating in Mauritius for more than two decades, maintaining a strong presence with promising growth prospects. “We have very good business here and will continue to invest and grow,” he affirmed, adding that the Bank’s strategy is highly aligned with Mauritius’ development objectives.
Mr Winters further noted that the Prime Minister, the Junior Minister of Finance, and the Governor of the Bank of Mauritius are all actively exploring how global shifts will impact Mauritius, and how the country can proactively seize opportunities while mitigating potential risks.
Touching upon climate finance, he reiterated the strong commitment of Standard Chartered in advancing sustainable financing solutions, which he described as a vital area for the future of both Mauritius and the global economy.
Mr Bill Winters has been the Group Chief Executive of Standard Chartered Bank since June 2015 and is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). With a prior career at JP Morgan, he later founded Renshaw Bay, a credit fund, before leading the emerging markets-focused bank where he serves as Group Chief Executive and Executive Director. Mr Winters is known for his engagement with climate finance, chairing the Net Zero Banking Alliance, and as a non-executive director for Novartis International AG.
