GIS- 19 September 2025: ‘Le Médecin qui rêva Maurice’, a special commemorative work elaborated by La Sentinelle Group on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR), was launched yesternight by the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
Several Ministers, Junior Ministers, members of the Diplomatic corps and eminent personalities were present on the occasion.
The book retraces the human, historic and momentous experiences of SSR as well as his significant achievements for the country.
In his address, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam stated that ‘Le Médecin qui rêva Maurice’ is a well-crafted work that evokes the eventful life of SSR and sheds light on many aspects that were yet known to the population.
The Prime Minister reminisced about his grandfather, who travelled to Mauritius on the Hindustan ship, emphasising that as he stepped in Aapravasi Ghat, he was unaware of the destiny of his future son. “Little did he know that his son would free this same country from colonialism”, said Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
Besides, the Prime Minister dwelt on the strong resolve and perseverance of SSR to attend school as well as his outstanding academic performances.
Dr Ramgoolam also paid tribute to the key figures who through support and assistance played a major role in the academic achievement of SSR: Madame Siris who enabled his enrolment at the Roman Catholic Aided School; the step-brother of SSR who financed his medical studies in London; and GMD Atchia who provided him with financial assistance to continue his medical studies.
Underlining that SSR obtained support from persons of different religions, the Prime Minister called for the forging of the same spirit of unity in our community so that we live as a united Nation.
Moreover, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam underpinned the lifelong teachings of SSR who championed the principles of respect for all, regardless of race, community and religion.
