GIS – 28 November 2024: The Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister of Finance, Minister for Rodrigues and Outer Islands, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond Bérenger; Ministers; the Leader of Opposition; Junior Ministers; and other Members, made and subscribed the Oath of Allegiance prescribed in Schedule 3 of the Constitution and signed the Roll of Membership, today, at the Opening of the First Session of the Eighth National Assembly in Port Louis.
Afterwards, the Assembly elected Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra as Speaker of the National Assembly in accordance with the provision of Section 32 of the Constitution and Standing Order 7 of the Standing Orders and Rules of the National Assembly.
It is recalled that Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra, a Barrister-at-Law, was the first woman Attorney-General and Minister for Women’s Rights and Family Welfare in Mauritius. She had served, among others, as Ambassador of Mauritius to France. In 2003, Mrs Aumeeruddy-Cziffra was appointed the first Ombudsperson for Children, and occupied the post until 2011. From 2012 to 2021, she was the Chairperson of the Public Bodies Appeal Tribunal.
During the First Session of the Eighth National Assembly, Member of Parliament, Mr Vedasingam Vasudevachariar Baloomoody, was elected Deputy Speaker. The Assembly also elected Member of Parliament, Mr Mohamed Ehsan Juman, as Deputy Chairperson of Committees.
