Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia meets with PM Ramgoolam

GIS – 04 December 2024: The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia, Mr Tim Watts, accompanied by a delegation including the Australian High Commissioner to the Republic of Mauritius, Ms Kate Chamley, met the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, at the New Treasury Building, today, in Port Louis.

In a statement after the meeting, Mr Tim Watts said that it is a great honour to meet the newly appointed Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and observed that he is the first world leader to meet with the latter after the recent elections.

He recalled that Mauritius and Australia are Indian Ocean neighbours that are not only connected by geography but also by demography. He stated that the second largest Mauritian diaspora in the world is in Australia while highlighting the warm friendship between the two countries. “Australia’s largest international University Campus in Africa is found in Mauritius, namely Curtin University, and we are collaborating on educating the next generation of young Mauritians as well as people across the African continent”, he stated.

Furthermore, he pointed out that with the increasing challenges in the Indian Ocean, both nations can be called upon to work together in many fields including building capacity in the maritime domain, building shared opportunities in the blue economy, and enhancing maritime safety and security in the region. Mauritius and Australia also work closely together in international fora like the Indian Ocean Rim Association, he underscored.
