GIS – 01 November 2025: A century of service is more than a milestone; it represents a legacy of trust, commitment, and the enduring economic and cultural partnership between Mauritius and India, said the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, last evening, at the Intercontinental Resort in Balaclava. He made this statement at the 100th anniversary celebrations of The New India Assurance Company Ltd’s operations in Mauritius
The Minister of Financial Services and Economic Planning, Dr (Mrs) Jyoti Jeetun; the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava; the Chairperson and Managing Director of the New India Assurance Company Ltd, Mrs Girija Subramanian; the General Manager of the New India Assurance Company Ltd, Mrs Jayshree Nair; and other distinguished personalities were present at the event.
In his address, Dr Ramgoolam recalled that the company was established during Mauritius’ colonial era, emphasising that the decision by an Indian company to invest in the island long before independence reflected foresight and confidence in its potential. He pointed out that New India Assurance believed in Mauritius a century ago and has remained a steadfast partner ever since, symbolising the deep economic and cultural bonds between our two nations, he said.
The Prime Minister praised the company’s enduring values of empathy, resilience, and trust, highlighting how they have provided security and confidence to countless families, businesses, and individuals. He underlined that insurance institutions are vital partners in national development, as they transfer risks, encourage investment, and strengthen economic stability. Insurance is not merely about business; it is about supporting people and enabling growth, he added.
Stressing the importance of strong institutions, Dr Ramgoolam remarked that Mauritius’ progress depends on governance that is independent, transparent, and accountable. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to revitalising national institutions to ensure they are effective and capable of supporting sustainable economic growth. A country earns the confidence of its people when its institutions function effectively, which is crucial for resilience in times of uncertainty, he said.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister drew attention to emerging challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, and technological disruption, underscoring the need for a robust insurance sector to manage these risks. He congratulated the management and staff of The New India Assurance Company Ltd for a century of dedicated service, adding that their achievements reflect the enduring partnership between Mauritius and India and reinforce a shared vision for prosperity, resilience, and inclusive growth.
For his part, High Commissioner Srivastava recalled that over the past century, The New India Assurance Company Ltd has supported businesses, safeguarded livelihoods, and contributed significantly to Mauritius’ economic development, reflecting the enduring ties between India and Mauritius. He noted that the company’s long-standing presence has bolstered confidence within the business community and strengthened the island’s economic resilience.
Mr Srivastava further stressed the broader economic and financial cooperation between the two countries, citing initiatives aimed at enhancing trade, deepening financial integration, and strengthening bilateral relations. He expressed confidence that The New India Assurance Company Ltd will continue to innovate, expand its services, and play a pivotal role in reinforcing the enduring Mauritius–India partnership.
As for Mrs Subramanian, she spoke about New India Assurance’s deep-rooted connection with Mauritius and its emphasis on long-term partnerships beyond business. She underscored the company’s commitment to customer-centric service, visible claim settlements, and individualised support, treating every policyholder as a brand ambassador. She further reassured that New India Assurance aims to support Mauritius’ economic diversification through customised insurance solutions, digital innovation, and coverage for emerging sectors, while remaining guided by its century-old philosophy of duty, integrity, and societal contribution.
