GIS – 06 February 2025: The Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme) and Chief Economist at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Dr Hanan Morsy, presented, today, her candidacy for the position of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) to the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, during a courtesy call at the Treasury Building in Port Louis.
Dr Morsy was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Ms Abir Alam Eldin.
In a statement, Dr Morsy pointed out that the meeting with Prime Minister Ramgoolam was an opportunity to put forth her expertise, experience and vision for the AUC as a potential candidate.
She called for the support and endorsement of Mauritius for her candidacy while underlining that the country is a beacon for climate resilience, economic diversification and financial innovation.
Dr Morsy further stressed on the need to have a stronger and high performing AUC that protects the interests of Member States, especially in the wake of geopolitical tensions, and increasing protectionism and multilateralism.
It is to be recalled that the election of the AUC for the term 2025 to 2029 is set to take place in February 2025 during the African Union Summit.
