Prime Minister leads Coordination Meeting ahead of Thaipoosam Cavadee and Maha Shivratree

GIS – 09 January 2026: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, chaired a meeting yesterday at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis with relevant Ministers to review the state of preparedness for the upcoming religious festivals, Thaipoosam Cavadee and Maha Shivratree.

Thaipoosam Cavadee will be celebrated on Sunday 1st of February 2026 and Maha Shivratree will be observed on Sunday 15 February 2026.

The meeting focused on enhancing coordination among the relevant ministries and authorities to ensure the smooth conduct of the religious events, with particular emphasis on the safety and well-being of pilgrims and devotees. Discussions covered key aspects such as logistics, security arrangements, traffic management, health services, and water supply.

Ministers present comprised the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mr Rajesh Anand Bhagwan; the Minister of National Infrastructure, Mr Govindranath Gunness; the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Darmarajen Nagalingum; the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed; the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr John Michaël Tzoun Sao Yeung Sik Yuen; and the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea.
