GIS – 13 January 2026: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, presided, this afternoon in the Lunch Room of the National Assembly in Port Louis, the meeting of the National Task Force set up to coordinate preparations for the upcoming Thaipoosam Cavadee and Maha Shivaratree festivals.The aim was to review the actions taken so far and address outstanding issues to ensure the smooth celebration of the two festivals on 01 and 15 February 2026, respectively.
Several Ministers, Members of Parliament, as well as relevant stakeholders from various Ministries, Departments, Local Authorities, law enforcement agencies and socio-cultural organisations, were present.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted that Government has earmarked some Rs 17.5 million for these two festivals, despite budgetary constraints, to ensure that all arrangements are in place so that these major religious events are celebrated in the best conditions possible.
Dr Ramgoolam informed that works already underway include river and drain cleaning and dredging, site embellishment, tree trimming, and road patching and asphalting. Other facilities include provision of good quality tents, podiums, chairs, mobile toilets, water and electricity supply, good lighting along roads, bins, medical services and the presence of Police Officers.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the two events are spiritual festivals and urged pilgrims to constantly maintain a pious attitude, act responsibly, respect Police instructions and avoid wearing dark clothes, especially at night. He moreover requested them to strictly abide by rules and regulations established for Kanwar dimensions as same will closely be monitored by relevant authorities.
He indicated that he will soon carry out a site visit at the Ganga Talao to take stock of progress of works so far. Moreover, Dr Ramgoolam called on all parties involved to work proactively to uphold the smooth running and safety of the celebrations, and underlined the importance of discipline and cooperation among all stakeholders.
