Continuous Medical Education: Prime Minister attends lecture on neurosurgery

GIS – 16 January 2026: The Ministry of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with C-Care, organised a Continuous Medical Education session entitled “Borders and Brains: International Collaboration in High-Stakes Neurosurgery”, yesterday, at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium, University of Mauritius, Réduit.

The lecture was delivered by Dr Thamer Abdullah Alaifan, Consultant and Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine and Critical Care from Saudi Arabia. The session aimed at enhancing healthcare professionals’ understanding of neurological complications in critical illness while promoting international collaboration in specialised neuro-care.

The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, attended the event as Chief Guest. Also present were the Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo; the Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Ms Anishta Babooram; the Chief Executive Officer of C-Care, Mrs Helene Echevin; the Chief Operating Officer of C-Care Wellkin, Mr Rudi Clarke; along with doctors and other prominent personalities from the medical field.

During the session, Dr Thamer Abdullah Alaifan focused on the brain, traumatic injuries, and neurosurgery, explaining how the brain works, what happens when injury is sustained and the causes of such injuries. He highlighted the importance of early and specialised care to protect the brain, quickly detect complications, and improve patient outcomes through close monitoring and international collaboration. The session concluded with an interactive question-and-answer segment.

Biodata of Dr Thamer

Dr Thamer Abdullah Alaifan is a Consultant in Internal Medicine, Critical Care, and Critical Care Ultrasound at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, under the Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs, Saudi Arabia. He is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Critical Care at King Saud bin Abdul-Aziz University for Health Sciences. He holds several prestigious qualifications from the American Board of Internal Medicine, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the National Board of Echocardiography. Dr Alaifan is actively engaged in research with publications in peer-reviewed medical journals.
