WHO Regional Director Pledges Support to Mauritius in Advancing Vision 2050

GIS – 21 January 2026: The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam this afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, during which he reiterated WHO’s commitment to supporting Vision 2050 in pursuit of a healthier and more prosperous nation.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Mr Anil Kumar Bachoo, and the WHO Resident Representative to Mauritius, Dr Abdou Salam Gueye, were also present. It is recalled that the WHO team is on an official visit to Mauritius from 19 to 23 January 2026.

Dr Janabi commended the Government for its sustained efforts to consolidate the healthcare system and improve the quality of life of citizens through equitable access to health services. He highlighted the shared vision of building a healthier and more resilient healthcare system and reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Mauritius in the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases.

The WHO Regional Director further pointed out that Mauritius recently secured a pooled procurement award, alongside seven other Small Island States, for the purchase of essential medicines, a measure that has contributed to mitigating high procurement costs. He lauded Mauritius for its low maternal mortality rate and robust tobacco control measures aimed at curbing consumption.

He further urged the community to adopt regular physical activity, such as walking and cycling, and to embrace balanced and healthier dietary habits. He underlined the importance of investing in a healthier and more active youth, encouraging preventive measures to help young people avoid teenage pregnancies and refrain from the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.

Dr Janabi assumed office as WHO Regional Director for Africa on 30 June 2025. He is a prominent cardiologist, a health strategist and a global health diplomat. Prior to his appointment, he served as Senior Health Advisor to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, and Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, the country’s largest referral facility. He previously led the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute, which he founded and transformed into a leading regional centre of excellence in cardiovascular care.
