GIS – 18 February 2025: Strengthening economic ties and exploring new investment opportunities were among the main topics of discussion between the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and the Secretary General of the Federation of United Arab Emirates (UAE) Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr Humaid Mohamed Bin Salem, this afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
Mr Bin Salem was leading a high-level delegation comprising representatives from some of UAE’s leading business companies.
In a statement after the meeting, the Secretary General described the discussions as highly productive and praised the Prime Minister’s long-term vision.
He underlined the strong relationship between Mauritius and the UAE and expressed optimism about future collaboration, especially with regard to the launch of new joint projects in Mauritius.
Mr Bin Salem outlined key sectors of business interest, stating that discussions with Prime Minister Ramgoolam focused on agriculture, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, logistics, clean energy, tourism, economic development, and digitalisation.
The Small and Medium Enterprises sector received special attention during the meeting. Plans for collaboration and exchange between officials from both countries were also discussed with a view to support strategic projects benefiting small businesses, farmers, and sustainable sectors such as the blue economy.
Opportunities to enhance trade and investment frameworks so as to facilitate greater private sector engagement between the two nations were also considered by the Prime Minister and the UAE delegation.
Mr Bin Salem underscored the UAE’s commitment to strengthening the economic and diplomatic ties with Mauritius, reinforcing the mutual benefits of increased cooperation.
About the Secretary General
Mr Humaid Mohamed Bin Salem has been the Secretary General of the Federation of UAE Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) since 2013. A key figure in fostering trade and investment, he has played a significant role in strengthening business ties both within the UAE and internationally.
Previously, he served as a member of the UAE National Assembly (2012–2016) and was Director General of the Umm Al Quwain Chamber of Commerce and Industry for two decades. He has also been a Board Member of the International Chamber of Commerce – UAE since 2009 and was elected Chairman in 2015.
