GIS – 12 March 2026: The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Dr Patrick Herminie, paid tribute, this morning, to the late Prime Ministers of Mauritius during a ceremony held at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden in Pamplemousses.
On the occasion, he laid wreaths at the samadhis of the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, and the late Sir Anerood Jugnauth.
The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond Bérenger; the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Dr Arvin Boolell; as well as other distinguished personalities were present on the occasion.
In a symbolic gesture, President Herminie planted a Stadtmannia oppositifolia (Bois de fer), representing unity, remembrance, and a commitment to preserving the country’s history. Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Dr Herminie signed the visitors’ book at the Château de Mon Plaisir.
Subsequently, President Herminie proceeded to the Aapravasi Ghat World Heritage Site in Port Louis where he was received by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Mahendra Gondeea, along with other eminent personalities. Dr Herminie laid a wreath at the historic 16 steps, paying homage to the indentured labourers whose arrival marked a significant chapter in the history of Mauritius.
Afterwards, the President of Seychelles visited the Intercontinental Slavery Museum in Port Louis. Among the sections toured was the Salle des Bustes de Froberville, which features a collection of busts cast from former African captives. Dr Herminie was accompanied by the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr Ashok Kumar Subron; the Minister of Arts and Culture; and other dignitaries.
