Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Former Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
During the meeting, discussions centred on avenues of cooperation between the University of Pakistan and the University of Mauritius, highlighting opportunities to strengthen academic ties and foster collaboration in higher education. Cooperation in the field of arbitration, as well as the potential engagement of Commonwealth judges, should the need arise, was also explored.
Justice Shah is a distinguished jurist known for his contributions to law, judicial reform and constitutionalism in Pakistan. He received his early education at Aitchison College before pursuing higher studies at the University of the Punjab, where he earned degrees in Mathematics, French, Economics and Law. He later studied at Downing College, Cambridge, obtaining B.A. and M.A. degrees in Law.
He began his legal practice in 1991 and played an active role in Pakistan’s 2007 Lawyers’ Movement, which supported judicial independence and the rule of law.
Justice Shah served as Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan until 2025, Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court from 2016 to 2018, and Acting Chief Justice of Pakistan in April 2025. Throughout his judicial career, he earned recognition for landmark judgments relating to environmental protection, judicial independence, governance, gender equality and public interest litigation. Justice Shah has also contributed extensively to legal education and judicial training and is internationally regarded for promoting progressive jurisprudence and improved access to justice.
