The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, received, this afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, the State Minister for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Ambassador Hadera Abera Admassu.
The Ambassador headed a delegation comprising the Director General for African Affairs at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zerihun Abebe, and the Group Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr Lemma Yadecha.
In a statement after the meeting, Ambassador Hadera Abera Admassu described his discussions with the Prime Minister as fruitful and underscored the longstanding ties between Mauritius and Ethiopia.
He recalled that Ethiopian Airlines first operated flights to Mauritius in 1976, during the tenure of the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, and noted that the airline, now Africa’s largest carrier, connects more than 60 destinations across the continent. According to him, this extensive network presents significant opportunities for Mauritius to strengthen its connectivity with Africa, expand trade and tourism, and reinforce its position as a regional hub.
The Ambassador affirmed the commitment of both countries to deepen their economic partnership and bring Mauritius closer to mainland Africa. He added that Ethiopia would support the development of Air Mauritius while fostering greater collaboration in investment, business and tourism.
Highlighting Ethiopia’s economic potential, Ambassador Hadera Abera Admassu noted that the country, with a population exceeding 130 million, is undergoing rapid economic transformation and continues to register double-digit economic growth. He expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation with Mauritius would create new opportunities for investment and trade, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
The Ambassador also identified financial services, the sugarcane industry, agriculture, agro-processing and industrial development as key sectors offering strong prospects for bilateral collaboration.
