GIS – 16 July 2026: The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of African Affairs of the United States (US), Ms Sarah Troutman, paid a courtesy call, this afternoon, on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
In a statement after the meeting, Ms Troutman said she is in Mauritius on a commercial diplomacy mission aimed at strengthening economic and investment ties between the two countries. She underscored the US’ interest in expanding its commercial engagement with Mauritius, noting that many American companies view the island as an attractive destination for investment and business operations.
According to Ms Troutman, discussions focused on opportunities for US companies to increase their presence in Mauritius and on advancing several potential commercial agreements ahead of the Corporate Council on Africa US-Africa Summit, which Mauritius will host in December 2026.
She expressed confidence that the Summit would further enhance economic cooperation between the US and African countries, adding that the US Government is looking forward to sending a high-level delegation to the event. The Summit, she said, is expected to provide an important platform for conducting business and signing new commercial deals.
Ms Troutman also welcomed Mauritius’ decision to sign the Artemis Accords, describing it as an important step towards strengthening cooperation in the space sector. She noted that the US sees Mauritius as a regional hub for technology and digitalisation and looked forward to future collaboration in these fields.
She further observed that the number of countries joining the Artemis Accords continues to grow, recalling that Botswana recently became a signatory, and reiterated the United States’ commitment to expanding international cooperation under the initiative.
The Artemis Accords are a non-binding set of principles established by the US, in collaboration with partner countries, to guide the peaceful, safe and transparent exploration and use of outer space.
