GIS – 23 July 2026: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, received, today at the New Treasury building in Port Louis, a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) led by the IMF’s Deputy Division Chief, Mr Augusto Azael Perez.
The delegation, comprising IMF’s Resident Customs Administration Advisor, Mr Stephen Mendes, and IMF’s Experts, Messrs Aldo Silvano and Oscar Alberto Nieto Mora, was accompanied by the Director-General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), Mr Rohit Ramnawaz.
In a statement following the meeting, Mr Ramnawaz highlighted that the IMF delegation is currently in Mauritius to undertake an assessment of the country’s customs administration in a bid to review existing procedures and identify measures to further enhance efficiency.
This exercise, he pointed out, seeks to strengthen customs operations while maintaining a balance between facilitating legitimate trade and preventing the entry of illicit goods by maintaining effective control.
MRA’s Director-General moreover indicated that the assessment exercise will also help to identify ways to reduce operational costs as well as improve the capacity of customs authorities to combat drug trafficking and other illegal activities.
He underpinned that the delegation reassured Prime Minister Ramgoolam that customs administration in Mauritius is already performing well, with no major concerns identified at this stage. Their final report and recommendations will serve as a guide to further improve customs services and enhance efficiency, he stated.
