The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, informed the National Assembly, today, during the Prime Minister’s Question Time, that the Economic Development Board (EDB) has on record some 523 private investment projects for a total amount of Rs 649.7 billion. These figures are reported in the EDB’s latest Newsletter published in August 2026.
Dr Ramgoolam pointed out that the projects form part of the EDB project pipeline and have varying implementation timeframes. Mixed-use and Smart City projects, for instance, are being implemented in several phases extending over 15 to 20 years.
Out of the 523 projects, 512 are active, representing a total investment of Rs 634 billion, while the remaining 11 projects, amounting to Rs 15.7 billion, are either on hold or have been cancelled.
The projects span several sectors, including real estate development, hospitality, tourism, healthcare, life sciences, renewable energy, logistics and warehousing, agro-industry, the blue economy and manufacturing.
The Prime Minister indicated that 26 projects are facing implementation delays due to a combination of factors, including investor decisions, permitting and licensing processes, and the evolving international context.
Projects already completed and those under implementation are estimated to have generated approximately 18,500 direct and indirect jobs, with a further 7,800 jobs expected as the projects are completed and become fully operational.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the EDB’s efforts to facilitate project implementation in collaboration with promoters and relevant public sector agencies. Of 39 high-value private sector projects, representing Rs 47.8 billion in investment, that were stalled within the administrative permitting ecosystem in December 2025, the EDB has helped unlock 32 projects worth Rs 34.4 billion within eight months, he said.
These projects are now at various stages of implementation, with some already completed and operational, others under construction, while some have obtained all the necessary permits and are ready to commence implementation.
The Prime Minister emphasised that once the projects become operational, they are expected to stimulate economic activity, generate further employment opportunities and contribute to sustained and inclusive economic growth.
