GIS – 07 September 2026: The Former Chief Justice of India, Mr Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, today at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. He was accompanied by his spouse and the High Commissioner of the Republic of India to Mauritius, Mr Anurag Srivastava.
In a statement, the Former Chief Justice said that the meeting with the Prime Minister focused on the longstanding shared heritage, values and traditions between Mauritius and India, as well as ways to further strengthen bilateral ties.
He noted that discussions covered numerous aspects of judiciary in both countries, particularly the role of technology in making court services more accountable, transparent and efficient to ensure timely justice to citizens.
Former Chief Justice Chandrachud also shared India’s experience in constitutional evolution, highlighting how constitutional amendments have enabled the Indian Constitution to respond to changing societal needs, including new rights such as rights to privacy and the right to a clean environment. He welcomed the establishment of a Constitutional Review Commission in Mauritius and stressed the importance of sharing experiences and ideas, particularly in addressing emerging challenges and opportunities while preserving the shared values and heritage of Mauritius and India.
