The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam cautioned internet users against offensive and unacceptable comments on social media targeting police officers who are performing their duties, particularly remarks based on their physical appearance.
Prime Minister Ramgoolam made the statement, today, after meeting with Woman Police Constable (WPC), Ms Mary Jade Catherine, accompanied by Woman Police Inspector, Mrs Poonam Coopan, following comments posted on social media after an intervention in front of the New Treasury Building in Port Louis two weeks ago.
Dr Ramgoolam reiterated that such comments should stop and spoke of untrue allegations circulating on social media concerning the young police officer. He also emphasised that criticism based on a person’s physical appearance is inappropriate.
The Prime Minister pointed out that WPC Catherine’s supervisor has confirmed that she is performing her duties diligently. He encouraged the young police officer to remain focused while highlighting that appropriate action will be taken regarding the matter.
Following the meeting, WPC Catherine stated she will continue to keep her head high while carrying her duties despite the challenges. She also called on fellow women police officers to demonstrate courage and perseverance in the performance of their work.
