Prime Minister Ramgoolam honours memory of 2013 flash floods victims

GIS – 30 March 2025: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, participated, this morning, in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Remembrance Stele at the Port Louis Waterfront (Entrance of Underpass South), in remembrance of the victims of the resulting flash floods that tore through Port Louis on 30 March 2013.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond Bérenger; the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr Ashok Kumar Subron; the Minister of Land Transport, Mr Mahomed Osman Cassam Mahomed; the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie; the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Mr John Micahël Tzoun Sao Yeung Sik Yuen; the Minister of Local Government, Mr Ranjiv Woochit; the Lord Mayor of the City Council of Port Louis, Mr Mamode Issop Nujuraully; as well as family members of the victims also laid wreaths at the Stele to honour the memory of the deceased.

A solemn religious ceremony was also held on the occasion. After the ceremony, Dr Ramgoolam greeted the family members of the victims of this painful incident.

It is recalled that 11 fatalities were reported during the flash floods. A total of six persons passed away in the underpass near Rogers House, two in the Harbour Front Car Park, one at La Chaussée Street, another along La Poudrière Street, and a lady who reportedly died due to emotional shock at Canal Dayot.
