The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to consolidating Mauritius’ position as a trusted international financial centre. He highlighted a new Business Facilitation Bill aimed at improving the business climate, easing investment, and supporting the country’s sustainable economic growth.
He was speaking yesterday at the Maritim Resort & Spa in Balaclava during a ceremony marking the 110th anniversary of HSBC’s presence in Mauritius. The event was attended by Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, financial sector representatives, business partners and HSBC officials.
The Government, according to the Prime Minister, is finalizing a new Business Facilitation Bill designed to remove bottlenecks, streamline administrative procedures, and establish a more efficient, transparent, and predictable business environment. He added that consultations led by the Economic Development Board are currently underway to identify key measures that will simplify processes, improve institutional coordination, and accelerate decision-making for both investors and businesses
Prime Minister Ramgoolam further emphasised that efforts to attract investment must be supported by strong institutions, respect for the rule of law and a robust regulatory framework to maintain the international credibility of Mauritius’ financial services sector.
Government’s strategy, he underlined, focuses on strengthening the country’s competitiveness and supporting businesses in accessing international markets, enabling Mauritius to adapt to the global changing landscape while reinforcing its reputation as a reliable jurisdiction for international business and financial services.
Reflecting on HSBC’s contribution to the country’s economic growth, the Prime Minister highlighted the bank’s historical links with Mauritius dating back to 1859. He noted that the bank initially supported international trade and the sugar industry, and later contributed significantly to the development of manufacturing, tourism, and financial services.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister commended HSBC’s contribution to elevating Mauritius as an international financial hub during the early 1990s. The launch of its dedicated global business sector unit proved instrumental in linking the nation to international markets and developing domestic financial talent.
HSBC Group Chairman, Mr Brendan Nelson reaffirmed the institution’s deep-rooted commitment to Mauritius. He emphasised the bank’s enduring partnerships with local clients and stakeholders, while highlighting its role in bridging Mauritian enterprises to international markets, global financing, and specialised expertise.
For her part, HSBC Chief Executive Officer and Head of Banking, Ms Hajrah Sakauloo emphasised the importance of the bank’s international network in supporting corporate and institutional clients. She stated that HSBC will continue to assist Mauritian businesses in pursuing new opportunities while contributing to the country’s growth as a globally connected financial hub.
