Prime Minister Ramgoolam engages NGOs in efforts to address social challenges

The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, met representatives of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, to discuss the social challenges facing the country, particularly those affecting young people and vulnerable families.

Also present were the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare, Mrs Marie Arianne Navarre-Marie; the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, Mr Ashok Kumar Subron; the Junior Minister of Tourism, Mrs Marie Anabelle Andelana Savabaddy; and Member of the National Assembly, Dr Rubna Begum Daureeawoo.

The meeting forms part of a consultation process initiated following recent unrest, with the objectives of understanding the underlying causes of these incidents and identifying appropriate measures to address the challenges faced by young people and vulnerable communities.

The consultation brought together NGOs working directly with young people and vulnerable families, with a view of drawing on their experiences and understanding of the challenges faced by communities. Discussions focused on education, employment, poverty, mental health, drug use, domestic and sexual violence, discrimination, social exclusion and youth development.

Representatives of NGOs highlighted the importance of strengthening family and community values, improving support for vulnerable groups, expanding recreational opportunities for young people and enhancing child protection. The need for regular consultations between the Government and NGOs was also emphasised to promote sustained collaboration in addressing these social challenges.

This initial consultation will be followed by discussions with interreligious committees, Ministries, parastatal bodies, relevant institutions and other stakeholders to develop a coordinated approach to addressing the country’s social challenges and elaborating concrete measures for implementation.
