GIS – 02 April 2024: The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, met Professors Derek Yellon and Malcolm Walker, medical experts who supported Mauritius in tackling major health challenges like heart disease, diabetes, obesity and kidney failure since 2007, this afternoon, during a courtesy call at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.
They were accompanied by the Officer-in-Charge of the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Health Promotion and Research Unit, Dr Nishant Nundlall, and Senior Adviser on Medical and Health Matters at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr Keyvoobalan Pauvaday.
In a statement following the meeting, Professor Walker pointed out that discussions with the Prime Minister focused on promoting collaborative research in view of reducing heart attacks.
Mauritius, he said, was involved in the first trials of this nature published in a study in 2014 adding that the country will be part of another study which is a follow-up. The research project will also involve other eight African countries, he added.
For his part, Professor Yellon commended Mauritius for its efforts in improving health care services for the population. Mauritius, he said, will play a fundamental role in the Pan-African study.
He underlined that a delegation of eight international speakers will be in Mauritius in October this year to discuss problems related to cardiology, diabetes and nephrology. He also reiterated his interest in promoting medical education in Mauritius.
