Prime Minister urges Police Recruits to work with integrity and professionalism

GIS – 09 April 2025: “Restoring confidence and trust in the Mauritius Police Force and ensuring that law and order is delivered in full compliance with the principles of justice, integrity and accountability are at the core of my vision for the country”.

The Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister of Finance, and Minister for Rodrigues and Outer Islands, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, made this statement, this morning at the SMF Gymkhana Sports Complex in Vacoas, at the Passing Out Ceremony of 284 Temporary Police Constables and 163 Temporary Women Police Constables enlisted in the Mauritius Police Force (MPF).

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Rampersad Sooroojebally, and other dignitaries were also in attendance. On that occasion, the Prime Minister remitted prizes to six best trainees of the different Police Training Institutions.

In his keynote speech, the Prime Minister congratulated the new recruits for the hard work, dedication and determination showcased during the completion of their nine-month training, adding that the way they presented themselves during the ceremony is testimony of the high standards of the training and discipline that they have embraced.

Dr Ramgoolam recalled that institutions such as the MPF are the bedrock of a civilised and democratic society, adding that for a country to progress, the Police must be endowed with independent decisions.

Underpinning his highest priority in restoring the law, the Prime Minister dwelt on his vision to ensure that the MPF regains its respectability so that Police officers command the respect and trust of all citizens. In this regard, he indicated that the Bail (Amendment) Act 2025 has been amended to make clear the powers of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Commissioner of Police, while recalling that a National Crime Agency will be set up to cater for the services of expert investigators.

The Prime Minister underscored the need to restructure the MPF by making it more dynamic and responsive to the needs of the modern society. He further highlighted the imperative need to reward professionalism, competency and effectiveness, and reassured that Government will provide the necessary resources for the Police to perform their core duties in an effective and efficient manner.

On that score, the Head of Government assured all Police Officers that they will each have a clear career path with deserving opportunities.

Furthermore, he emphasised the essential role of the new recruits in this transformation and modernisation process of the MPF and the opportunity for them to bring to it renewed trust. “When you uphold the law fearlessly, show fierceness and respect, protect the vulnerable, refuse to be compromised, place professionalism higher than any other influence on you, you will not only succeed, but also restore faith in entire institution,” he said.

The Prime Minister Ramgoolam urged them to uphold the law with unwavering integrity and to ensure that their actions remain guided by justice, while cautioning that no abuse of power and authority will be tolerated from any Police Officers.

With regards to the drug trafficking, the Prime Minister pointed out that its proliferation is destroying the lives of youths, families and the social fabric. He pledged his deep resolve to put forth all efforts and all means to get rid of this plague, underlining Government’s intent to undertake bold actions.

While hailing the decision to the new recruits in choosing this noble job and endeavouring to serve the population and the Nation, the Prime Minister reminded them that they are now the guardians of democracy and the protector of all people.

“Your unflinching commitment and professionalism will be critical in making Mauritius a better and safer country,” he said, while further urging them to serve the country with courage, loyalty and compassion.
