Prime Minister Ramgoolam and EU delegation reaffirm commitment towards a stronger collaboration

GIS- 11 April 2025: The promotion of a stronger alliance between Mauritius and the European Union (EU) for sustaining the country’s developmental progress was at the fore of discussions held this afternoon during a meeting between the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and the EU delegation, at the Treasury Building in Port-Louis.

The Ambassador of the EU to the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Oskar Benedikt, was also part of the delegation.

The delegation comprising Ambassadors of other Member States is on a visit to Mauritius in the context of the first Mauritius–European Union Partnership Dialogue held yesterday with the aim to address contemporary global issues and establish a cohesive collaboration.

In a statement, Prime Minister Ramgoolam emphasised the vital importance of cooperation with the EU, underlining that the relations between the two parties go back to well before the country’s independence. The meeting, he said, enabled both parties to reaffirm their engagement to work hand-in-hand for achieving shared goals.

He further indicated that it is crucial to consolidate a solid foundation for Mauritius and EU collaboration which can be beneficial for the country and its people, taking into consideration the prevailing economic context.

“We want this partnership to reach another level”, affirmed the Prime Minister while highlighting the need to intensify efforts for developing priority sectors namely trade and investment, sugar, financial services and tuna industry, amongst others.

Mr Benedikt, for his part, pointed out that it was a fruitful exchange between both parties as it set the pace for a stronger collaboration in the future. He reiterated the commitment of the EU to be a reliable partner to Mauritius and to continue to reinforce the long-standing bilateral ties.
