GIS \u2013 07 December 2024<\/b>: Mr Dharambeer Gokhool and Mr Jean Yvan Robert Hungley have been sworn in as\u00a0President and Vice-President\u00a0of the Republic of Mauritius respectively,\u00a0today, at the State House in\u00a0R\u00e9duit, preceeding their election at the National Assembly on 06 December 2024.<\/p>

The newly appointed President\u00a0took the oath of Allegiance and oath of Office\u00a0of the pursuant to Section 30(b) of the Constitution\u00a0before the Chief Justice,\u00a0Ms Rehana Bibi Mungly-Gulbul.\u00a0As for the Vice-President, he took the oath of Allegiance and oath of Office\u00a0of the pursuant to Section 30(b) of the Constitution before the President, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool.<\/p>

The swearing-in ceremony was held in the presence of the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond B\u00e9renger; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra; Cabinet Ministers;\u00a0and other eminent personalities.<\/p>

In a press statement,\u00a0Mr Gokhool stated that the post of President is a very challenging one and he affirmed that he will shoulder his responsibilities and serve the country to the best of his abilities. \u2019\u2019As the President of the Republic, I will be\u00a0a people\u2019s President who is close to the citizens,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u00a0<\/p>

His presidency, he highlighted, will be guided by the principles of inclusion, and will be in line with Government\u2019s programme and its key priorities. They are namely: sustainable development and poverty alleviation; democracy and human rights; the fight\u00a0against drug trafficking; enhanced quality of services; preserving social values; inclusion of senior citizens; and the promotion of technology and innovation for social development.\u00a0<\/p>

The President also indicated that he will work hard to promote\u00a0Mauritius on the international front and make of the country\u00a0the star and key of the Indian Ocean whilst leaving a legacy for future generations.\u00a0<\/p>

As for the Vice-President, he\u00a0said that his objective is to contribute in the economic development of the country\u00a0adding that he will deliver his duties to the best of his capabilities. For him, safeguarding democracy and freedom of the press will be of prime concern.<\/p>
