GIS \u2013 28 June 2025<\/b>:\u00a0The 65th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of the Independence of\u00a0the Republic of\u00a0Madagascar was marked by a reception,\u00a0yesterday,\u00a0at the Municipal Town Hall of Curepipe,\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0presence of the Acting President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Jean Yvan Robert Hungley,\u00a0the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and\u00a0the\u00a0Malagasy\u00a0Ambassador, Mr Albert Camille Vital.<\/p>\n

The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Paul Raymond B\u00e9renger;\u00a0the Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy and Fisheries, Mr Arvin Boolell;\u00a0Members of the Diplomatic Corps,\u00a0and other dignitaries were\u00a0also\u00a0present.<\/p>\n

In his address, Ambassador Vital described 26 June as a historic date marking the restoration of Madagascar\u2019s sovereignty and the collective aspirations of its people. He highlighted the longstanding and fraternal relationship between Mauritius and Madagascar,\u00a0underscoring shared historical, cultural and human connections. “Our two nations stand as examples of the power of dialogue and regional cooperation,\u201d he said,\u00a0while reaffirming the close ties that unite\u00a0the two countries\u00a0in friendship and solidarity.<\/p>\n

The Malagasy Ambassador also seized\u00a0the occasion to commend Mauritius for its successful win over the Chagos Archipelago.\u00a0\u201cThe reinstatement of the Chagos Archipelago,\u201d\u00a0he underlined,\u00a0\u201cdemonstrates the ability of nations like Mauritius to solve international disputes over sovereignty and historical rights.\u201d\u00a0He emphasised that the victory will serve as\u00a0an\u00a0inspiration to other nations,\u00a0particularly\u00a0Madagascar\u00a0with regards to its\u00a0claim of sovereignty over the Scattered Islands.<\/p>\n

Referring to\u00a0the return of 25.5 kg of gold by\u00a0the\u00a0Mauritian Prime Minister to Madagascar\u00a0during\u00a0the 5th<\/sup>\u00a0Indian Ocean Commission Summit, Mr Vital affirmed that this initiative is\u00a0a testament to the depth of mutual respect and collaboration that exist between the two island nations.<\/p>\n

According to Mr Vital, trade and investment between the two nations continue to grow. In 2024, Madagascar exported goods worth approximately Rs 2.5 billion to Mauritius with agriculture, textiles and seafood leading the way. Investments in Madagascar over the past decade have reached Rs 15 billion primarily in tourism, agri-business, textile, and information technology sectors.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Malgasy Ambassador expressed the wish to further strengthen collaboration as regard labour migration,\u00a0adding that\u00a0over 1,000 Mauritian companies currently employ around 7,000 Malagasy workers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u201c<\/strong>This cooperation,\u201d\u00a0he noted,\u00a0\u201cnot only supports economic growth but also improves the quality of lives of workers and their families.\u201d\u00a0He pointed out that discussions\u00a0were ongoing to establish a legal framework to ensure decent working conditions,\u00a0and safe and well-regulated migration.<\/p>\n

Speaking on drug trafficking,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Vital reported that\u00a0over\u00a0400 kilograms of illicit drugs were seized in Madagascar through joint operations with Mauritian authorities, highlighting the shared commitment to combat transnational crime.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Vital concluded by reiterating\u00a0Madagascar\u2019s unwavering commitment to strengthening ties with Mauritius based on shared values of friendship, justice and development.\u00a0Recalling\u00a0that both countries are members of the Indian Ocean Commission,\u00a0the\u00a0Southern African\u00a0Development Community and the African Union, he put forth the\u00a0\u00a0collective responsibility to promote\u00a0economic development, stability and prosperity across the Indian Ocean region.<\/p>\n
