GIS \u2013 06 January 2025:<\/b>\u00a0The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, signed the Condolence Book opened in memory of former United States (US) President Jimmy Carter, this afternoon, at the U.S. Embassy in Port Louis, in presence of the U.S. Ambassador to Mauritius, Mr Henry V. Jardine.<\/p>

As the longest-lived President in U.S. history, Mr Carter passed away on 29 December 2024, at the age of 100. He was the 39th\u00a0President of the United States and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.\u00a0<\/p>

In a statement, the Prime Minister recalled that he had the opportunity to meet former President Jimmy Carter at a Davos World Economic Forum. He mentioned that their discussion focused on two main topics, namely: climate change, which greatly interested Mr Carter, and ways to strengthen the electoral system to prevent challenges that occasionally arise during elections.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam also reminisced about inviting President Carter to Mauritius\u00a0as\u00a0he was actively involved with a group dedicated to monitoring free and fair elections, although the visit\u00a0ultimately\u00a0did not\u00a0happen. He emphasised that President Carter was a man of profound moral clarity,\u00a0with a vision that extended beyond America to encompass global peace.<\/p>

Mr Carter,\u00a0born in 1924,\u00a0served\u00a0as U.S President\u00a0from 1977 to 1981.\u00a0During his mandate, he prioritised human rights and brokered the Camp David Accords, bringing peace between Egypt and Israel.\u00a0He also negotiated the Panama Canal\u00a0Treaties and focused on energy conservation and environmental policies.<\/p>

After leaving\u00a0Office,\u00a0late President\u00a0Carter continued his humanitarian work through the Carter Center, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his peacebuilding and election monitoring efforts.<\/p>
