GIS – 31 January 2025:<\/b>\u00a0The Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of international arbitration, the rule of law and the peaceful resolution of disputes.<\/p>

He was speaking today at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis in the context of the 125th Anniversary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and the 15th Anniversary of the PCA Mauritius Office. Several personalities were in attendance including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful,\u00a0Attorney General, Mr Gavin Patrick Cyril Glover and the Secretary-General of the PCA, Dr Hab Marcin Czepelak.<\/p>

In his keynote address Prime Minister Ramgoolam elaborated on the PCA\u2019s journey which is the oldest permanent inter-governmental institution dedicated to international disputes. In the face of evolving challenges, he stated, the PCA has reinvented itself to adapting to the complexities of the modern world while remaining fundamental to its principles.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam highlighted that the signing of the host agreement in April 2009 which led to Mauritius chosen as the first country to have a PCA office outside of the Hague, shows a testament to the nation\u2019s strategic location and commitment to the rule of law and its conducive business environment.<\/p>

The Prime Minister further mentioned that the PCA office in Mauritius is strategically vital to accelerating and professionalising the African business community in international trade as well as multiple economic opportunities. To this end, he spoke of his upcoming participation in the African Union\u2019s conference in mid February 2025.<\/p>

Speaking on ensuring a robust and transparent legal system in the country, Prime Minister Ramgoolam referred to the Government Programme 2025-2029 stipulating the establishment of a superior court of appeal as recommended in Lord Mackay\u2019s Report to hear appeals from the Supreme Court and arbitration tribunals.<\/p>

Government, he added, will introduce a new international investment and commercial court to boost confidence to international investors and those doing business in Mauritius that its legal and judicial system will resolve disputes in a timely manner.<\/p>

The Prime Minister looks forward to the collaboration between Mauritius and the PCA to reach new heights to make the country a hub par excellence for international arbitration in the region. Dr Ramgoolam expressed his appreciation to the PCA from its enduring commitment to international peace and justice and partnership to Mauritius.<\/p>

Prime Minister Ramgoolam dwelt on the full support of Government so that all arbitration institutions come together for a unified arbitration centre.<\/p>

Attorney General Glover emphasised on the need to reinforce trust and fairness in the legal and judicial system of the country while highlighting that Mauritius has made significant progress and remains an arbitration friendly destination.<\/p>

Dr Hab Marcin Czepelak expressed appreciation with regard\u00a0to marking the PCA\u2019s 125th anniversary and 15th years of existence in Mauritius. The PCA\u2019s Secretary-General reiterated support to collaborating with Mauritius in the field of arbitration.<\/p>
