GIS \u2013 03 Oct 2025<\/b>: The Chief Justice of India, Shri Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai, currently on an official visit to Mauritius, delivered a lecture on The Rule of Law in the Biggest Democracy as part of the inaugural Sir Maurice Rault Memorial Lecture, today at the Paul Octave Wiehe Auditorium in R\u00e9duit.

The visit demonstrates the deepening of the bilateral relations between Mauritius and India and the commitment to upholding justice, strengthening democratic institutions, and enriching legal traditions.

The event, jointly organised by the Judiciary in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Office, the High Commission of India and the Mauritius Bar Association, was attended by dignitaries including: the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Dharambeer Gokhool; the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam; the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs Shirin Aumeeruddy-Cziffra; the Attorney-General, Mr Gavin Patrick Cyril Glover; the Chief Justice of Mauritius, Mrs Rehana Bibi Mungly-Gulbul; the High Commisioner of India, Mr Anurag Srivastava; several Ministers; Members of the Parliament; Puisne Judges and legal practitioners.

In his keynote address, Chief Justice Gavai paid tribute to the legacy of Sir Maurice Rault, through his commitment to justice and fairness in the legal field. He reflected on Dr B.R Ambedkar\u2019s and Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s foundational principles, indicating that in India the rule of law is is not a mere set of rules, but an ethical and moral framework designed to afford equality, protect human dignity and guide governance in a diverse society.

Highlighting the relevance of the rule of law, Chief Justice Gavai remarked that it is a guiding principle for the judiciary ensuring justice, fairness, good governance and equality. The Chief Justice also dwelt on the deep historic bonds between India and Mauritius, underlining both countries engagement towards democratic values.

In his remarks, the Attorney-General spoke of the leadership and historic reforms of Sir Maurice Rault in the judiciary system. Mr Glover extended gratitude to Chief Justice Gavai for strengthening judicial dialogue through the insightful lecture on the rule of law. He spoke of the shared experience of constitutional democracy that binds both countries while recalling Prime Minister Ramgoolam\u2019s recent visit to India. The Attorney-General emphasised the importance of safeguarding the rule of law as the living foundation of justice.<\/p>
