GIS- 08 October 2025: <\/b>The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, reiterated Government\u2019s steadfast commitment to cater for the well-being of the elderly, highlighting their invaluable contributions in shaping the socio-economic and cultural landscape of the country.<\/p>

He was speaking today at an official ceremony organised by the Ministry of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity in collaboration of the Senior Citizen\u2019s Council at the J & J auditorium in Phoenix, to mark the International Day of Older Persons.<\/p>

The Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Mr Paul Raymond B\u00e9renger; the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security, and National Solidarity, Mr Ashok Kumar Subron; Ministers; Junior Ministers; the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Mauritius and Seychelles, Ms Lisa Simrique Singh; and Members of the National Assembly as well as the Diplomatic corps, were also in attendance.<\/p>

In his keynote address, the Prime Minister recalled that Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam laid the foundation for the National Pension Scheme in Mauritius and reassured the population that Government will maintain the pension scheme, a vital pillar of the country\u2019s social protection system. \u201cIt is our duty to protect the welfare of our elders while securing the future of our children and grandchildren,\u201d he stated.<\/p>

As regards the increase of the threshold of the Basic Retirement Pension from 60 to 65 years, he noted that it was a difficult but necessary measure to ensure fairness and sustainability in the long term.<\/p>

To support the transition PM Ramgoolam indicated that the pension reform is being implemented in gradual phases. As part of this approach a monthly Income Support of Rs 10,000 for individuals reaching the age of 60 starting from 01 September 2025, is currently being implemented.<\/p>

Moreover, an expert committee will be set up to assess and recommend reforms to the national pension system, he pointed out. The Prime Minister also announced upcoming reforms to the disability allowance scheme, aiming to improve efficiency and better serve those in need.<\/p>

With regard to the growing impact of drug abuse and parental mistreatment, Dr Ramgoolam stressed that the National Drug Agency will be reinforced to address these issues while ensuring the safety of the elderly. Additionally, the Protection of Elderly Persons Act (2005) will also be amended, he stated.<\/p>

For his part, DPM B\u00e9renger reiterated Government\u2019s strong engagement to improving the quality of life for senior citizens, despite the country’s ongoing economic challenges.<\/p>

He acknowledged the challenging economic context currently facing Mauritius, particularly in light of the recent credit rating by Moody\u2019s. Despite the challenges, Government remains committed in its duty to care for and support the older citizens, he said. \u00a0<\/p>

Minister Subron listed a series of reforms aimed at improving the lives of senior citizens namely the establishment of an Ombudsperson for the elderly to improve care and strengthen their rights and an increase in Carer’s Allowance to better support families and individuals providing daily care to older persons. \u00a0<\/p>

The Day is observed annually on 01 October and this year\u2019s theme is \u201cOlder Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights\u201d.<\/p>
