GIS- 09 January 2026:<\/b>\u00a0Dr Philip Baker, King\u2019s Counsel (KC) at the Field Court Tax Chambers in the United Kingdom, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, yesterday at the New Treasury Building in Port-Louis.<\/p>

The meeting was held in context of the ongoing reforms aimed at modernising and strengthening the country’s tax system, namely through the introduction of the Qualified Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax.<\/p>

The objective remains to position Mauritius as a competitive jurisdiction while ensuring full compliance with international standards, including those of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.\u00a0During his visit to Mauritius, Dr Baker took note of the various proposals submitted by stakeholders in the financial sector and carefully examined them with the aim of ensuring a broad and inclusive consultation.<\/p>

In a statement, Dr Philip Baker pointed out that he had an interesting and productive meeting with the Prime Minister. Discussions, he said, focused on a project in which PM Ramgoolam shows keen interest and that the project is on track for good results.\u00a0<\/p>

About the International Taxation expert<\/b><\/p>

Dr Philip Baker is a world-class, internationally renowned expert in international taxation and the author of the authoritative work on Double Taxation Conventions.\u00a0 He possesses extensive experience in legislative tax drafting and has in-depth knowledge of the Mauritius legislative framework.<\/p>

He was instrumental in drafting Mauritius\u2019 Double Taxation Framework regime in the 1990s, which has played a pivotal role in establishing the country as a successful and competitive international financial centre.\u00a0 He also contributed in elaborating the partial exemption regime which eventually replaced the Double Taxation Framework regime.<\/p>
