GIS \u2013 24 Feb 2026<\/b>:\u00a0An\u00a0International Monetary Fund\u00a0(IMF) delegation led by the Division Chief Resource and Information Management Division of the Fiscal Affairs Department, Mr\u00a0Torben Hansen, called on the Prime Minister, Dr\u00a0Navinchandra Ramgoolam, today at the\u00a0New Treasury Building\u00a0in\u00a0Port Louis.<\/p>

The meeting was held in the context of an ongoing IMF technical mission to Mauritius, which is supporting the Government in the preparation of a Fiscal Responsibility legislation, as outlined in the Government Programme 2025\u20132029. The proposed legislation represents a central pillar of the country\u2019s broader economic reform and fiscal consolidation agenda.<\/p>

It aims to establish a strong legal framework to ensure the long-term sustainability of public finances, enhance the efficiency of public spending and promote greater transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.<\/p>

In a statement following the meeting Mr Hansen\u00a0said that he briefed the Prime Minister on the progress of the mission and its preliminary findings. Over the past two weeks, the IMF delegation has held consultations with officials from the Ministry of Finance, members of the National Assembly and other senior stakeholders.<\/p>

These discussions have contributed to a comprehensive assessment of Mauritius\u2019 economic environment, enabling the identification of key fiscal challenges and priority areas that the proposed Fiscal Responsibility legislation could address, he pointed out.<\/p>

According to Mr Hansen, the recommendations formulated are grounded in international best practices and informed by extensive consultations with Mauritian stakeholders, ensuring that the proposed framework is both technically sound and tailored to the country\u2019s specific context.<\/p>
