GIS \u2013\u00a020\u00a0February 2025<\/b>:\u00a0The Prime Minister, Dr\u00a0Navinchandra\u00a0Ramgoolam,\u00a0was briefed, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, on the one-week mission conducted by a team from the Global Fund,\u00a0a funding mechanism established in 2002\u00a0to\u00a0fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria,\u00a0regarding its support in Mauritius\u2019\u00a0combat\u00a0against HIV\/AIDS.<\/p>

The team comprised the\u00a0Senior Fund Portfolio Manager, Dr Joshua\u00a0Galjour, and the\u00a0Senior Programme\u00a0Officer,\u00a0Mr\u00a0Sylvain Parent.\u00a0<\/p>

In a statement, after the meeting, Dr\u00a0Galjour highlighted\u00a0that since 2010, the Global Fund had already\u00a0disbursed more than\u00a0US$\u00a018 million to\u00a0assist\u00a0Mauritius in the fight against HIV\/AIDS. He\u00a0also\u00a0informed that a grant of\u00a0US$\u00a02.3\u00a0million\u00a0was being managed by\u00a0the National AIDS Secretariat,\u00a0operating under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Wellness,\u00a0to support the HIV response over\u00a0a\u00a0three-year\u00a0period,\u00a0from 2024 to 2026.<\/p>

The Senior Fund Portfolio Manager\u00a0indicated as well that Mauritius had already financed more than 80%\u00a0of\u00a0its\u00a0response to HIV\/AIDS\u00a0while the Global Fund contributed some 8% of the global needs with a focus on community aspects, harm reduction,\u00a0and population groups that were particularly vulnerable to HIV.<\/p>

According to\u00a0Dr\u00a0Galjour, the\u00a0results\u00a0were\u00a0positive. He thus commended\u00a0the commitment of stakeholders, the\u00a0strong collaboration between the government and civil society actors,\u00a0along with\u00a0the work\u00a0carried\u00a0out by\u00a0the National Social Inclusion Foundation in helping\u00a0organisations at the community level.<\/p>

The Global Fund Representative\u00a0remarked however\u00a0that though\u00a0significant strides had\u00a0been made, there remained\u00a0work to be done. He\u00a0hence\u00a0highlighted the need to aid the Ministry of Health and Wellness concerning the quality of data in order to better monitor the evolution of the HIV\/AIDS epidemic in terms of the affected population group, prevalence and the number of new cases. \u201cBut I believe we are on the right track, and we will remain available to support the National AIDS Secretariat in these\u00a0efforts,\u201d added Dr\u00a0Galjour.<\/p>
