A United Kingdom delegation in Mauritius for negotiations on the Chagos Archipelago, accompanied by the High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Mauritius, Mr Paul Brummell, called on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, this afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. The Attorney General, Mr Gavin Glover, was also present at the meeting.<\/p>

The delegation comprised the Director, Overseas Territories and Polar Directorate and Lead Negotiator, Mr Robbie Bulloch, the Senior Diego Garcia Treary Negotiator, Overseas Territories and Polar Directorate, Mr Peter Candler, and the Legal Director, Mr Paul McKell.<\/p>

In a statement, Mr Bulloch highlighted that the meeting with the Prime Minister was an opportunity to exchange views, while recalling that Mauritius and the UK have been working closely for many years.<\/p>

He pointed out that all parties concerned must reach an agreement to enable the Treaty on the restitution of the Chagos Archipelago to the Republic of Mauritius to be finalised, adding that the delegation also held meetings with Mauritian Government officials earlier today.<\/p>

For his part, the Attorney General indicated that the delegation came to Mauritius at their request to discuss the way forward due to the fact that the Diego Garcia Military Base and British Indian Ocean Territory Bill would not be introduced to the House of Lords this month. He nonetheless remarked that an agreement was reached between the UK and the United States of America (U.S.) administrations regarding the Exchange of Notes, while the political sign-off of the U.S. President is still being awaited.<\/p>

Mr Glover moreover underlined that the Mauritian Government will take appropriate decisions as and when required depending on how the situation evolves.<\/p>
