Investment in the financial services sector increased significantly from Rs 974 million in 2024 to Rs 18.7 billion in 2025, mainly due to a major investment in AfrAsia Bank by Access Bank UK.

Notable growth in FDI inflows was also observed in several productive sectors, namely in Information and Communication, where investments increased from Rs 192 million to Rs 985 million; energy sector which rose from Rs 352 million to Rs 1 billion; and in agriculture, where inflows expanded from Rs 507 million to Rs 807 million, he said.

Prime Minister Ramgoolam further highlighted that France and South Africa remained the principal source countries for FDI over the past three years, while strong inflows were also recorded from the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates.

He recalled that the Government’s new economic model, as announced in the 2025–2026 Budget Speech, is investment-led, productivity-based and export-driven. In this context, several measures are being implemented by the Economic Development Board to strengthen Mauritius’ attractiveness as an investment destination, he said.

They include strengthening the Mauritius brand through targeted and data-driven investor outreach; improving the ease of doing business and addressing weaknesses identified in the World Bank B-READY Report; widening market access through economic and trade cooperation agreements; and revamping the work permit system to facilitate the recruitment of skilled foreign professionals.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister announced additional initiatives aimed at boosting investment inflows to mitigate the negative impact of the ongoing conflict in the Middle-East on our economy. They are: the introduction of a Golden Visa Scheme, the setting up of a Fast-Track Concierge Service for investors, and accelerated licensing procedures for service providers in the financial services sector.

Government, he said, is also developing a Special Economic Zone at Côte d’Or to attract international technology firms and encourage the establishment of AI, data and disaster recovery centres in Mauritius. In parallel, port infrastructure will be further modernised through the establishment of an Island Container Terminal to position Mauritius as a leading transhipment hub in the Indian Ocean region, he pointed out, he added.

Dr Ramgoolam reiterated Government’s determination to continue implementing reforms and strategic investment initiatives aimed at fostering economic diversification, enhancing value addition and creating sustainable employment opportunities for the Mauritian population.

20 May 2026

Email: gis@govmu.org

Website: https://gis.govmu.org

Mobile App: GIS News

Topics: Finance, National Assembly

In reply to a Parliamentary Question with regard to Foreign Direct Investments (FDI), the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, reaffirmed, yesterday in the National Assembly, Government’s commitment to attracting greater FDI into productive and emerging sectors as a key pillar of Mauritius’ economic transformation strategy.
