The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, met with Bishop Jean Micha\u00ebl Durh\u00f4ne, Diocese of Port Louis, this afternoon at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, to discuss key issues relating to education and social challenges at the national level.<\/p>

Bishop Durh\u00f4ne was accompanied by P\u00e8re Pierre Piat, Econome Dioc\u00e9sain; P\u00e8re Alain Romaine, D\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9 Episcopal; Mrs Marie Aim\u00e9e Dinan, Financial Administrator of the Diocese of Port Louis; and Mrs Gilberte Chung Kim Chung, Executive Director of the Service Dioc\u00e9sain de l\u2019Education Catholique (SEDEC).<\/p>

In a statement after the meeting, Bishop Durh\u00f4ne described the discussions as very constructive. He indicated that talks focused on major challenges in the education sector and schools, as well as broader societal issues such as violence, discrimination, youth development and family-related concerns. He also underlined the good collaboration that exists between the Church and Government, noting that meetings with the Prime Minister are held two to three times every year.<\/p>

For her part, Mrs Gilberte Chung Kim Chung stated that the delegation had fruitful discussions with Dr Ramgoolam, who, she said, is deeply concerned about the situation facing today\u2019s youth. She emphasised the importance of providing quality education to all children across the Republic.<\/p>

Mrs Chung also highlighted that SEDEC is currently reflecting on the future direction of its schools and colleges, with particular attention being given to literacy, numeracy and early childhood education. She further spoke about the growing fragility of young people and the various societal problems affecting them, while stressing the need for continued Government support to help advance educational initiatives.<\/p>
