Mauritius is pursuing a policy of gradual liberalisation of air access through bilateral agreements to enhance international connectivity while ensuring fair and equal opportunities for the continued development and growth of the national carrier, Air Mauritius Ltd.<\/p>

The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, made this statement yesterday in the National Assembly in reply to a Parliamentary Question pertaining to air traffic rights.<\/p>

Prime Minister Ramgoolam highlighted that international air services can only operate after the conclusion of a Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Mauritius and the destination country. These agreements, he pointed out, establish the framework governing international air services, including traffic rights, airline designation, capacity, tariffs, competition policy, as well as safety and security requirements.<\/p>

He indicated that Mauritius has, to date, concluded Bilateral Air Services Agreements for scheduled air services with 60 countries, out of which 35 have been signed. In addition, Mauritius has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on air services with Dubai and three Codeshare Agreements with Canada, Chile and Japan.<\/p>

The Prime Minister further stated that, under the provisions of these agreements, foreign designated airlines are required to submit applications to operate scheduled commercial flights for two seasons during the Northern Summer Season, which runs from the end of March to the end of October, and the Northern Winter Season, from the beginning of November to the end of March of the following year.<\/p>

He added that applications received between March 2024 and October 2026 included requests from six new foreign airlines seeking to operate commercial flights to Mauritius. They are World2Fly from Spain; ITA Airways from Italy; IndiGo from India; Ethiopian Airlines from Ethiopia; Airlink from South Africa; and Cobra Aviation from South Africa.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam emphasised that air connectivity remains a key driver of the country’s economic development, while reassuring that any decision to grant access to Mauritius’ airspace will be taken only after a thorough assessment of the potential benefits for the country.<\/p>
