The Mauritius Prison Service continues to reinforce security across correctional facilities through enhanced surveillance, modern detection technologies and upgraded security infrastructure to prevent the illegal use and possession of mobile phones within prison premises.<\/p>

The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, made this statement yesterday in the National Assembly in reply to a Parliamentary Question on the illegal use and possession of mobile phones within prison premises and the measures taken and being envisaged to prevent such occurrences.<\/p>

He highlighted that additional security equipment is being procured, the mobile phone jamming system at Melrose Prison will be upgraded shortly, anti-pelting netting is being installed in correctional facilities and a new anti-drone system is expected to be procured by March 2027 to further strengthen prison security.<\/p>

Speaking about measures already in place to deter the introduction and use of prohibited mobile phones in prisons, Prime Minister Ramgoolam indicated that these include enhanced searches of detainees, prison officers, visitors and vehicles, as well as regular intelligence-led searches conducted by the Prison Intelligence Unit and the Prison Dog Section.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam further indicated that the Mauritius Prison Service makes use of body scanners, baggage scanners, metal detectors, mobile phone detectors, anti-drone systems and mobile phone jammers. The Service also relies on CCTV surveillance, regular patrols, and the continuous training and sensitisation of prison officers on security procedures.<\/p>

Moreover, the Prime Minister underlined that, from November 2024 to 29 July 2026, a total of 579 mobile phones had been seized within prison premises. Of these, 41 were found on detainees, while 538 were recovered elsewhere within prison compounds.<\/p>

According to him, 41 cases in which mobile phones were suspected to have been used to commit criminal offences were referred to the Police for investigation. One person has been charged and the case is currently before the Court, five cases have been filed, while 35 remain under Police inquiry.<\/p>

The Prime Minister underscored that 1,362 mobile phones seized by the Mauritius Prison Service between 2019 and 30 June 2026 have already been destroyed.<\/p>
