The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam welcomed the newest cohort of some 360 Temporary Police Constables and Temporary Woman Police Constables, and 6 Police Band Constables enlisted at the Mauritius Police Force (MPF), this morning at the Gymkhana Sports Complex in Vacoas. The Commissioner of Police, Mr Rampersad Sooroojebally, was also present on the occasion.<\/p>

The Passing Out Parade of the newly recruited Temporary Police Constables and Temporary Woman Police Constables marked the completion of their foundation training.<\/p>

In his keynote address, the Prime Minister highlighted that the new law enforcement officers have taken the solemn pledge to serve the citizens of country, discharge their duties with loyalty, courage and impartiality and uphold constitution and law of country. \u201cYour oath taken is a sacred commitment to people of Mauritius, calls upon you to place duty before self, exercise authority with compassion, fairness, and humility and service every citizen without fear and favour\u201d, he recalled.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam also emphasised that commanding the respect as well as trust of the public is a fundamental necessity for effective policing, where each daily interaction serves as a vital opportunity to strengthen public confidence in the institution.<\/p>

Commending the contribution of the MPF in ensuring the security of the population, the Prime Minister underpinned Government\u2019s intent to build a modern, efficient and reliable police force. He pledged for the continued investment of Government in the professional development and training of officers, as well as ensuring a clear career path with promotion opportunities on a meritocratic basis rewarding professionalism and competency.<\/p>

He reiterated Government\u2019s firm commitment to protecting law enforcement officers from insults and physical assaults while in the line of duty, through robust legislative reinforcements to ensure their safety and authority.<\/p>

As regards the drug scourge, the Prime Minister underlined that it requires strong determination, a sustained and resolute response that target offenders, organised networks, and financial structures behind drug trafficking. He pointed out that the setting up of the National Crime Agency remains a pivotal step to building an integrated multiagency response to serious organised crimes, announcing that a National Crime Agency Bill will soon be introduced in the National Assembly.<\/p>
