GIS \u2013<\/b>\u00a003 September 2026:\u00a0<\/b>The Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, launched the BOMStats platform, a central database of the Bank of Mauritius (BoM) which will enable businesses, researchers, policy makers and citizens to access reliable and timely statistical information, this evening, in presence of the Governor of the BoM, Dr Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor in Port-Louis.<\/p>

This initiative coincides with the 59th anniversary of the establishment of the BoM on 01 September 1967, and highlights the institution\u2019s contribution to the economic and financial development of Mauritius.<\/p>

In his address, the Prime Minister congratulated the Bank of Mauritius on its 59th anniversary and welcomed the introduction of BOMStats, developed in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the African Development Bank (AFD). The BoMstats, he stated, marks an important milestone in the modernisation of the BoM in terms of greater transparency, better governance and evidence-based decision making.<\/p>

The new portal, he stated, is in line with Government\u2019s vision to spearhead digital transformation, modernise public services, strengthen the use of technology and make information more accessible. He observed that, in a rapidly changing world, data has become one of the nation\u2019s most valuable resources. Economies, added Dr Ramgoolam, are increasingly shaped by digital technologies, global connectivity, financial innovation, and rapidly evolving market and consumer behaviour.<\/p>

The Prime Minister recalled that Mauritius graduated to the IMF\u2019s Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) in February 2012, becoming the second Sub-Saharan African country to achieve this status. Stressing that \u201cgood economic policy begins with good statistics\u201d, he noted that the State of the Economy report 2024 prompted Government to request an IMF Report on the Observance of Standards and Codes (ROSC) to assess the quality and reliability of national data.<\/p>

The ROSC underscored the need to strengthen statistical capacity and modernise data dissemination. In response, Government is reviewing the Statistics Act and the Bank of Mauritius Act to strengthen the statistical framework and further reinforce the central bank\u2019s independence. He also highlighted Mauritius\u2019 adoption of the IMF\u2019s highest data tier, the SDDS Plus, in March this year, making Mauritius the first African country to join the group of around 31 countries adhering to the standard.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam also underscored the importance of strengthening Mauritius\u2019 international credibility, investor and rating confidence, financial stability, institutional governance and access to international markets. He noted that BOMStats forms part of Government\u2019s efforts to improve access to high-quality economic and financial information.<\/p>

He further announced that Statistics Mauritius will shortly undertake a comprehensive revision of the national accounts system in line with the latest United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA), with Mauritius aiming to become the first African country to adopt the SNA 2025.<\/p>

According to him, these statistical reforms send a strong signal to investors, development partners and rating agencies that Mauritius is committed to the highest standards of statistical transparency, data quality and international best practices. \u201cThe strength of a modern economy depends not only on policies but also on the quality of information\u201d, he said adding that there is a clear link between strong institutions and competitive edge of countries.<\/p>

Dr Ramgoolam further stressed the importance of Artificial Intelligence and institutional architecture as the engines of long-term prosperity. He emphasised that institutions will be called upon to adapt to an economic environment that promotes independence and transparency. This will further reinforce confidence in the economy and build a more resilient and forward looking Mauritius, he stated.<\/p>

For her part, Dr Thakoor indicated that this initiative forms part of the BoM\u2019s effort to promote greater transparency, strengthen statistical governance, and embrace digitalisation. The platform, she said, is in accordance with the Open Data Platform of the AFD and serves as a practical gateway for monetary, financial, external sector and payment statistics.<\/p>

She expressed confidence that the Bank would continue to expand the platform and excel in providing comprehensive, timely and reliable economic and financial data essential for policy formulation and decision-making. In this regard, she reiterated the BoM\u2019s commitment to strengthening data quality, timeliness, integrity and transparency.<\/p>
