GIS \u2013<\/b>\u00a010 September 2026:\u00a0<\/b>The development of interventional radiology and interventional oncology services in Mauritius, through a collaborative partnership, was the focus of discussions, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, during the courtesy call of Consultant Radiologist, Prof Edward Lam Shang Leen, on the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam.<\/p>

Prof Edward Lam Shang Leen, who is Emeritus Professor of Radiology at Imperial College London, was accompanied by the Senior Adviser on Medical and Health Matters at the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Dr Keyvoobalan Pauvaday.<\/p>

In a statement, Prof Lam Shang Leen said that discussions during the meeting focused on the plans to be implemented during his stay in Mauritius, within the framework of the collaborative partnership, which he said would benefit healthcare in the country. He highlighted that the objective of the initiative was to increase national healthcare capacity through cost-effective procedures that are less painful, involve shorter recovery times, and result in fewer complications.<\/p>

Among the activities planned are several workshops and the treatment of patients using minimally invasive procedures for cancer care. Clinical lectures, academic presentations, multidisciplinary team meetings, and meetings for continuing professional development will also be held. Moreover, some 12 patients will be treated by Prof Lam Shang Leen.<\/p>

According to the Professor, the current state of interventional oncology in Mauritius is very promising. He added that, while the country currently has the necessary medical personnel, there is a need to train more staff, particularly interventional nurses and technicians. Prof Lam Shang Leen stressed too the importance of acquiring additional equipment to enable further minimally invasive treatments, including regional chemotherapy.<\/p>
