GIS \u2013 02 April 2025<\/b>: In a courtesy call, this afternoon, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis, the Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, presented to representatives of the African Development Bank (AfDB), the economic vision of the Government for a resilient Mauritius.<\/p>

The AfDB team, comprising the Director General for the Southern Africa Regional Development, Integration and Business Delivery Office, Mrs Leila Mokaddem; the Deputy Director General and Country Manager for Mauritius, Ms Moono Mupotola; and the Executive Director of AfDB, Mr Gerard Pascal Bussier; are presently in Mauritius to discuss collaborative endeavours with various stakeholders of both the public and private sectors.<\/p>

In a statement after the courtesy call, the Director General, Mrs Mokaddem, congratulated the Prime Minister for the vision for Mauritius based on economic resilience, recognising the potential long-term impact on economic activity, employment, and the income of the population. She talked of political and sectoral reforms, decisions, actions and measures to be taken accordingly.<\/p>

The meeting served as a platform, too, for discussing the country\u2019s priorities and the support that the AfDB could provide within the framework of the strategic partnership. \u201cThis strategic partnership,\u201d she stated, \u201cis centred around two main pillars: first, enhancing the business environment and driving structural reforms in infrastructure; and second, focusing on the financing of important infrastructure projects in the water, energy, and port sectors.\u201d<\/p>

The country\u2019s debt level and the necessity to rethink development financing strategies, including increasing private sector participation in economic projects, were also the focus of the meeting.<\/p>

For her part, the Deputy Director General and Country Manager for Mauritius deemed the courtesy call on the Prime Minister instructive as she learnt and understood Government priorities. She looked forward to explore ways to support the Mauritian government on matters such as improving the business environment, bringing in reforms, developing PPP frameworks, assisting the country in accessing climate financing and in the establishment of its national development plans, as well as other short-, middle-, and long-term initiatives. On that account, Ms Moono Mupotola intended to meet with various Cabinet Ministers, Government Officials, and Development partners so as to work together more effectively.<\/p>

As for the Executive Director, he underlined that since Mauritius became a member of the AfDB in 1974, some 53 projects to the tune of Rs 90 b had been implemented in several economic sectors. Mr Bussier indicated that for this year, some Rs 20 b was available through various financial instruments to support both public and private sector projects. He added that the mission in Mauritius was to take cognizance of the development initiatives that could benefit from the funding.<\/p>
